Olympus big shoot experience day http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/10/olympus-big-shoot-experience-day On Monday I tottered off to Dean valley Studios is set in lovely country surroundings in Buckinghamshire on a ' big shoot experience ' with Damian McGillicuddy, Olympus' principle photographer.

It was a fun day at an amazing shoot location.  We had two fantastic models Akari Desire and Toni Harrison, who were made up and styled by the talented Zoe Hughs. Wearing some fabulous foam feather creations by John Foam-Wizard Davis.

As it was an Olympus event I had the option to try out one of their Olympus OMD EM1's.  So I decided to shoot solely on the EM1 and examine the images at home.  I've been mulling over switching from my Nikon DSLR system to the Olympus micro 4/3's for a while so this was a good opportunity  to try it out on a fashion location shoot.

I found it surprisingly intuitive, as I had worried it would be so overloaded with features it would mean constant trolling through the menu functions.  Most of the basic controls I needed like changing aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and colour balance easy to locate.  I was really impressed with the colours and clarity of the live view, both through the view finder and on the display on the back of the camera.Once I got the SD card home and loaded it up I found it a true reflection of the images captured.  Focus seemed easy and accurate.

I was really pleased with the images, especially those shot on the 75mm prime.  Please see below for a selection from the shoot.

Getting Sharper Images with your photography. http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/6/getting-sharper-images-with-your-photography

Getting Sharper Images

fashion and beauty photographyfashion and beauty photography

1. Focus in the right place

Make sure that you have the focus set to the most important part of your photo. When photographing people, choose the eyes as the spot to focus. If your subject is not a person choose the area in your view that is the most important part of your story.

2.Focus point - YOU chose where to focus

You need control over what you are shooting, so YOU choose your focus point instead of allowing the camera to choose it. To do this, set the camera to single point focusing. If your camera allows it, you can move the single focus point around in the view finder, as necessary to ensure the focus is just where you want it. It doesn’t have to stay in the centre, most photos tend to be more interesting when the subject is off centre.

3. Fast shutter speed.

Keeping a fast shutter speed will help keep your photos sharp. As a rule of thumb, keep your shutter speed at least the same as your focal length (i.e. focal length 100mm = 1/100 shutter speed. If you drop below these, without the use of a tripod you will get camera shake and will result in blurry photographs.

If you don’t feel comfortable working with your camera in full manual mode, set it to shutter priority to allow you to set your shutter speed as above, and the camera will work out the aperture you need to allow a good exposure of your chosen subject. This way you won’t accidently be shooting at too low a shutter speed.

4. Shallow depth of field

A shallow depth of field can give great artistic images, however it takes practice to shoot at open apertures like f/1.8. When first shooting at these apertures, you may think the photos are out of focus. In reality something in the photo is in focus— but it perhaps not the part you intended. Practice, practice and being specific about where you are focusing will help.

5. Don’t focus and recompose at wide apertures.

Whenever you are shooting at an aperture f/2.0 or wider and close to your subject DON’T lock in your focus and move the camera to recompose the shot. With such a wide aperture there isn’t any room for error, and you are quite likely when moving the camera to recompose the image, to slip into another plane of focus by moving slightly forward or backwards. You’ll get better results by moving your focus point in the camera’s view finder.

6. Good light is important

The camera needs good light in order for the AF to lock onto a good focus point focus. The more light you have the better. Make sure that the eyes are well lit on your people subjects (catch lights are a good way to judge this and make for a pleasing image)

7. Low ISO

ISO doesn’t really affect sharpness, but images shot at high ISOs often don’t look as sharp because of the noise/grain that high produced at high ISO. Keep your ISO as low as possible without sacrificing a good exposure.

8. Lenses you get what you pay for.

A nicer lens will generally give you sharper photos. Kit lenses (i.e. an 18-55 f/3.5-5.6) are made with inexpensive glass. Some exceptions are the Canon 50mm 1.8 and the Nikon 50mm 1.8. Both are sharp lenses with an inexpensive price tag. Generally with optics you get what you pay for. If you are unsure about the outlay, why not hire a good lens for a weekend and see how you feel about the results

Hasselblad/ Broncolor/ Advanced Photographer magazine shoot http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/11/hasselblad/-broncolour/-advanced-photographer-magazine-shoot Again, still a little behind with the blog, but have to mention the shoot I took part in in London back in August this year.  I entered into a competition set up by the Advanced Photographer magazine.  I had to enter 3 portrait images linked by a theme, so I uploaded 3 recent 'dance themed' portraits and crossed my fingers.  I wasn't really expecting to get thru esp. as I had been lucky enough to be chosen for a similar competition last year.  So I was ridiculously excited when Will Cheung, the magazines editor emailed me inviting me to shoot in London.

The prize was a shoot at the Hasselblad studios in London, getting to use the Hasselblad H5d to shoot with !!! ( I know) and topping of the experience up by using the broncolor lights at the studio.

I met up with 5 other lucky photographers at the studio, after staying the night at a local easy hotel.com ( actually wasn't too bad, cheap .... and orange!)  We had a history lesson on Hasselblad, and then a technical talk from the bron color lighting experts.  We then got to work with two lovely models to try and get the covershot for the magazine.  Only the catch was we wouldn't get too see or edit our images, they were going straight off the back of camera to be looked at by the Advanced Photographer team, who would pick a winner.

Unfortunatly I didn't get the cover shot, but I had a blast on the day and LOVED using the Hasselblad camera, and really really want the chance to use one again ! I've now been spoilt.

Once the magazine featuring the article on us was out we were sent a disc containing the images we had taken, to look at and edit for our own portfolios.  The files were ENORMOUS but the clarity and detail was amazing.

Here are some of my edits

Funky Wedding part 2 http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/11/funky-wedding-part-2 So you've had a little look at the very fabulous images we produced in Cannon Hill Park, lets take a little look at part 2....... shot in Birmingham's Digbeth.

We  had lots of fun in this great urban setting, really got some creative images.  Again these were a collaboration with friend and fellow photographer Rob Farrell, models were the crazy and fun Bron and Ash.  The dress was again generously loaned to us by Posh Frocks.

So here it is a wedding Digbeth style......

Funky Wedding Photography http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/11/funky-wedding-photography This is a little late going on the blog as I have been soooo busy of late over here at LKPhotography.  This is what I got up to last month.  Together with a very good friend and fellow photographer Rob Farrell a plan was hatched to shoot a styled funky wedding.  We wanted to show people what could be achieved with a little out of the box thinking, and give a little inspiration to people who want to veer away from the traditional.

We chose two contrasting locations, Cannon Hill park and then Birmingham's creative hub Digbeth, and then we put on our thinking caps !  We decided to go all out and shoot two couples the lovely Bron and Ash and Laura and Alex.  We had dresses supplied by Posh Frocks, and even a vintage suitcase and post box thrown into the mix lovingly loaned to us by The little English Wedding Company.  On the day we assembled at my studio in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter to done dresses and make up, with the expert help of our fab make up artist Zarra Khan

Burlesque http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/5/burlesque burlesque dance birmingham photography

Burlesque is a very old and very popular form of entertainment, which began in the 1840s. It was used by the working class performers as a way to mock the upper classes, their traditions, social habits, culture and fashion.

The performances relied on mockery and played to the audience's desire for laughter and lust.  Due to the 'naughty' nature of the performances, burlesque usually targeted working class men, but as word spread it drew a wider audience including some women keen to witness this social taboo.

Today however it is more about empowering women, encouraging them to embrace their sexuality and femininity and be confident in expressing themselves in a sensual way.  One of Rosy Cheeks students summed up her feelings on burlesque, and 'Girl Power' in her well written article in DIVA.

There have been some beautiful and amazingly talented burlesque icons over the years;

To name but a few.

Burlesque dancing is becoming an increasingly popular pass time, with lots of women letting out their diva vixen in a cloud of fabulous glitter, sparkle and feathers.  Burlesque lessons are becoming popular for hen parties, and as glamorous form of exercise that not only improves fitness but increases self confidence for its participants, often to the point of stepping on stage and performing a burlesque dance in front of an appreciative audience.

When we were asked if we'd photograph a 'A Cheeky Spring Fling' back in March, we jumped at the chance.  The Custard Cuties, taught by Rosy Cheeks,  brought their own distinctive brand of mischief  to the Hare and Hounds Kings Heath.  A night of glitter, glamour and giggles full of vintage allure and tantalising fun.

The Spring Fling also included special guests, providing enchanting performances throughout the night.  Sapphire Silk, the self-proclaimed gin-soaked seductress, Scarlett O’Sparkle, feisty and fiery, with a pinch of sparkle, and the fabulous Lux De Lioux , showing off her amazing and unique style of burlesque.  Not forgetting the dazzli...
ng Lola Lashes, a burlesque performer reminiscent of the great Betty Page.

This fabulous night not only provided fabulous performances, but also raised money for the charity Mind.

Ok so now its time too see some of the girls on all their sparkly glittery glory.burlesque dance birmingham photography

New Photography Studio Location in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/5/new-studio-location-in-birminghams-jewellery-quarter Well May has been a busy and exciting month for us at LKPhotography.  We have taken the plunge and taken on a small studio space of our own.  Up until now we have worked like a lot of photographers hiring time by the hour in various studios as and when we have needed to.  As we cover such a wide range of photography we had always felt up until now we couldn't justify a full time studio.

Then we had a little re think and change of heart.  We had a long hard think about the sort of work we really enjoy and came to the conclusion it was mainly studio based portraits  For Lee, he really enjoys fun family portraits, and for me ( Kate) I really love working on beauty, fashion and pin up style shoots.

So we commenced our search for some space, vaguely with the idea of a studio share or having to rent hours out to other photographers.  Whilst on our location quest the very lovely Deb from Tiptop Studios got in touch with an interesting offer ! Tiptop studios is a fab photography studio run by the very friendly Deb and Steve.  I am a member of their photography club that meets twice a month, and had often hired out studio hours for shoots.  They had room for hire in their studio and asked if I would be interested in it as a small studio.  So myself and Lee mulled it over and decided to go for it.  We thought it'd be a great stepping stone and start up studio.

So now at LKPhotography have our very own studio space, and some lovely landlords and friends.  Its really nice when I need to stretch my legs after a few hours editing to pop next door to Deb & Steve's office for a chat and a cuppa !   So how many people can we fit in our little space???   Well so far this month, we have fitted a family photo session of 2 teenagers, 1 baby & 2 mums, a ballet dancer, an opera singer along with red carpet, and the very lovely model Emilia Vile and her skyscraper heels.  I think we've had some great results;

Crimes of Passion, Film Noir in Birmingham. http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/5/crimes-of-passion-film-noir

Our Crimes of Passion story,

Photographed at Birmingham's art deco Electric Cinema.  Our film noir style shoot aimed at capturing the 1940's cinematic style lighting, with a popular film noir genre 'crimes of passion'.

The electric cinema provided a fantastic authentic location for this shoot.  To create the lighting style we were after we used continuous video lighting, instead of speedlights.  Our dark, romantic characters were played by Joel Hicks and Emilie Walt.

Shoot was styled by Fotofilia.

Advanced Photographer Portrait competition http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/12/advanced-photographer Well last month I entered a portrait competition in the fab magazine Advanced Photographer.  So how excited was I to be selected as one of the eight finalists who got to spend the day shooting in a studio with fashion photographer Dave Kai Piper, the stunning and oh so professional model Chloe Jasmine Whichello.  The team from Sigma Imaging including Paul Reynolds were there, as we were shooting with their Sigma SD1 and of course Will Cheung, editor of Advanced Photographer.

These were the three portraits I entered that grabbed me a place on the day.  They feature the oh so pretty pin up models Kia L'Amour and Diablo Rose, shot in the previousley featured Vintage Salon in Birminghams Custard Factory.

Sooooo wanna see what happens behind the scenes when you fill a studio full of photographers a model, a make up artist, throw in some great teaching, a new camera, and a magazine editor....    Oh and a little healthy competition in the form of a brand new Sigma DP2 Merrill camera for a prize....

So this is the team all together for one final photograph, after a long but FUN day at the studio. ( hint...I'm in pink !)  Then it is up to us eight finalists to spend the weekend scrutinizing and editing our images, and deciding which three we want to submit to be judged by Dave, Will and the guys from Sigma.

I really enjoyed the shoot, got some great teaching from Dave Kai Piper,  and was really pleased with my images......but it was really tough chosing which ones to go with for the submission.  Its hard trying to second guess what others are going to think of your work and how they will judge it.  These are a selection of my favourites from my shoot............

.......so those where the images I didn't submit.......and now for my final three that I decided to enter.......

This is my 'Hollywood, Marilyn' style look. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. A different take on the 'red carpet'.

This image was taken at the end of what was a very long day for our model Chloe. I caught this beautiful image as she rested her hand to her forehead between poses. I love the softness and warm glow in this.

I love the beautiful clean lighting in this one, and the gorgeous curved 'S' shape made by Chloe as she looks off into the distance. To complment this I went for soft muted tones in my post production.

So ......did one of my final three images win ????  Well I can't spill the beans so you will have to wait until the 13th Dec and grab yourself a copy of Advanced Photographer Magazine to find out !

We would like to introduce you to the very fabulous Perry family.  We met up last week with Dad, Darren, Mum Stacey and the very lovely teenage Lucy, and the ohh so cute baby Pheobe.  We think they look great in their photos and had a fun time working with them.  Enjoy....................

Gorgeous Vintage Pin ups http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/10/gorgeous-vintage-pin-ups Gorgeous Vintage Pin Ups..............

We loved our day shooting at Le Keux Vintage Salon @ The Custard Factory so much last month, that we went back for a second day.  We met four more fab vintage models, all fantastically styled by the Vintage Salon, and sporting some AMAZING corsets, by Rawhide Corsets.

ENJOY.....................................

Ayeshea & Nick's day out...... http://www.lkphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/9/ayeshea-nicks-day-out

The lovely Ayeshea and Nick are getting married next year.  They decided to take up our August Lifestyle shoot offer.  They used it have a pre wedding shoot, to  get used to having the camera around and being photographed so they aren't worried about it on their big day.

We ummmm'd and ahhhhh'd about where to go for their photo shoot, and then hit upon the idea of The Black Country Living museum.  Ayeshea and Nick had never been......  So we combined a great day out around a 'living victorian town' and photo shoot...added in some sunshine (lucky considering this years summer) and got a great day out and some fab images.
